Rohde & Schwarz (News - Alert) recently introduced an advanced integrated end-to-end test solution with IP and protocol statistic analysis capabilities designed to carry out assessment of data transmission on smartphones. Featuring the new R&S CMW-KM051 option, the R&S CMW500 wideband radio communication tester analyzes and tests IP-based applications using deep packet inspection (DPI) engine from ipoque. The new offering will enable a better understanding of the impact that mobile apps can have on performance of wireless communications and mobile phone networks.
The rapid growth of third-party apps for mobile devices poses a great challenge for network operators and smartphone manufacturers that have to address challenges such as uncontrolled data traffic on the network and pressing demands on the hardware infrastructure of a mobile phone.
The R&S CMW500 allows real-time testing of wireless communications networks such as LTE (News - Alert), WCDMA and WLAN. The instrument uses integrated data application unit to integrate standard RF testing requirements with the IP world. The inclusion of the R&S CMW KM051 option allows the R&S CMW500 to quickly analyze and test IP-based applications which makes optimization of applications for networks easy for operators. On the other hand, smartphone manufacturers can use the instrument to gather data on how an application can impact battery capacity and other areas of a mobile phone.
IP analysis includes the logging of each IP data packet which is sent and received at the IP protocol level. For a more precise analysis, functions such as list of active IP connections and protocols used, TCP analysis, data volume statistics, protocol name resolution and triggering on IP events is used. To locate error sources, IP analysis records the IP traffic of applications.
Since it features the R&S CMW-KM051 option, the R&S CMW500 can make use of ipoque's field-tested PACE software to deliver precise application awareness to the device. PACE is a software library which makes use of deep packet inspection (DPI) to locate recurrent patterns. The software then uses the detected recurrent patterns along with behavior and statistical analysis to efficiently categorize protocols and applications on the network.
