Free Wi-Fi services are set to hit the London boroughs of Barnet, Harrow, Haringey and Brent, using street lampposts and other existing street equipment to cover the area for individuals out and about, and that could mean big things for softswitch technology and business VoIP in the region.
"This innovative deal shows that whether you are a smartphone user checking email, dipping into a good book on a tablet or using a laptop for the office, Harrow town center is tech friendly and open for business,” said Councillor Susan Hall, leader of Harrow Council. “Harrow is increasing in importance both as a business hub and a shopping center, and we need to be able to offer our visitors and employees the ability to stay in touch while on the move."
Free Wi-Fi is good for business promotion, as it offers customers the opportunity to connect for free to the Internet, which, in turn, allows people access to knowledge about local businesses, as well as offer them a convenient service.
By providing free Wi-Fi access, organizations can show that they value their clients’ time, and allow them to still be productive while they wait for their appointments or business meetings. For those who might not be as busy, Internet access can also be welcomed distraction while they wait.
Additionally, for businesses that are registered on location-based social networking sites, such as Foursquare, Facebook (News - Alert) or Twitter, free Wi-Fi would allow customers to immediately update their locations, thus providing free publicity and recommendations to their friends and followers.
Free Wi-Fi means businesses are investing in the latest in telecommunications technology, like VoIP, to help offer these free connectivity services.
Wi-Fi through VoIP technology can enhance remote worker productivity by allowing workers to stay in touch while on the go.
VoIP makes call routing easy, so while clients are using free Wi-Fi spots, calls can be forwarded to mobile phones and clients or colleagues will still feel as if they are calling into a dedicated office.
Free Wi-Fi services are an integral tool for operators in maintaining quality mobile service during a time of heavy data traffic, congested mobile networks and, for travelers, costly roaming charges.
It’s an excellent use of existing technologies to keep operators competitive—and travelers and passersby connected and in communication with those businesses.
